Sustainable Tourism: a case study in the Egadi Islands

(WP2 Project Eco-innovation in Sicily)

Effective protection of the environment can not be separated from a sustainable development of tourism. This is especially relevant in the case of the smaller islands where the fragility of ecosystems may be affected by significant seasonal tourist flows .

To develop an eco-tourism means not only implement proper management and conservation of natural resources and landscapes but also retrain the supply of goods and services, creating conditions for a financial return.

For the sustainability of tourism in the archipelago of the Egadi , the ENEA project carries out activities in the following areas :

•        sustainable management of water resources: the treatment and reuse of wastewater, reducing fuel consumption;

•        sustainable management of the waste cycle along with the realization of a pilot plant for composting;

•        sustainable management of natural resources studies on the quality of the marine and coastal environment.

At the same time a process on " environmental certification " has been started aimed at an overall local environmental improvement and, in the long term , at the “EMAS” certification of the Archipelago of the Egadi . The EMAS logo attests a commitment to the environment and its contribution to the Egadi islands would be the first example of insular locations nationally certified.

The project, which is also based on the involvement of the local tour operators , will focus to a better qualification of the touristic offer and a better use of existing facilities during the whole year.

The Project is funded through the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) in accordance with the provisions of article 2, paragraph 44 of Law 21 December 2009 (Finance Act 2012).
